More than 650 men were arrested during the Razzia of Putten, October 1944. The razzia left an enormous hole in the community. The 45 men that were transported to Sandbostel in April 1945 had survived other camps in Germany. They almost made it to the liberation of the camps. Not all of the men reached Stalag X B. During the bizarre evacuation of KZ Neuengamme numerous men died. Geurt Dirksen probably too… In the days till the liberation of the camp on 29 April, but also after the liberation in hospitals in the Rotenburg are men from Putten died. Only 12 of them returned home in April, May or even later. At least two of those who returned died in Putten shortly after they had come back.
Ruurd and Ben portrayed the men in their own ways.
